There are many clubs at JC to choose from, but only one offers students the opportunity to dissect organs. On February 26, the Future Health Care Workers of America had their monthly meeting.
At this meeting, Guest Speaker Dr. Kathleen Gotzmann, an OBGYN at Upper Chesapeake, talked about her job and brought a new, hands-on experience to the group.
Dr. Kathy brought in placentas for club members to look at, touch, and dissect. They had gloves and some surgical utensils for members to use, so they could get the full experience.
Many students were fully immersed and excited to learn about it while others were apprehensive and a little less eager.
Junior Natalie Gotzmann founded this club during her freshman year to share her “interest of going into the medical field with other students in our school who may have the same goal.”
Natalie’s club mission is to “inspire students through science and to help them find their true path in the medical field.”
Natalie hopes to be a Sports Medicine Physician in the future, and by starting this club, she hoped to find other students interested in the healthcare field.
Natalie got the idea of bringing placentas in for a meeting from her mom, Dr. Kathy. Since Natalie had seen them before, she thought it would be cool if she could bring them in.
Natalie feels this was “truly an amazing experience and not something everyone gets to see in their lifetime.”
She was excited to share this opportunity with fellow students.
She felt this would be beneficial for the Future Health Care Workers of America. This is something that the club had never done before, and she felt it went very well.
Since this was the club’s first hands-on experience, Natalie made a sign-up sheet to ensure people knew what they were getting into. She said that the placentas intrigued everyone who did sign up.
She said it benefited the members because “it showed them the anatomy of the placenta and gave them an idea of what organs feel like. . . It allowed students to explore and ask questions about something people knew little about.”
Natalie said that this is one thing she can add to her list of club memories, but her favorite part of leading the club is “reaching out and communicating with all types of medical professionals.”
She feels that she has learned so many things from medical professionals who have spoken at the meetings.
