London, U.K. – A security clothing company in London is being criticized for marketing “stab-proof vests” in reaction to the FIFA World Cup attendees this summer. The international soccer competition is scheduled to take place throughout South Africa, where 50 out of 49 million people are killed every day. In the year ending March 2009, there were 18,148 deaths in the country. And 52% of the deaths involved knives or other sharp objects. With such statistics, security has become an issue for event organizers. The company making the vests, Protektorvest , charges $70 dollars for the “stab-proof vest.” The vest even comes branded with the flag of the buyer’s country.

Paris, France – The Black Eyed Peas were shut out of their best international group award at France’s top music awards after a mistake was made. The Black Eyed Peas were awarded the Best International Group, only to find out later in the show that the award was actually intended to go to the German group, Tokio Hotel . Later at the same event, Rihanna fell offstage after finishing her performance of “Russian Roulette.” Last year’s event was marked by confusion as well, when Katy Perry was given the award for best international song, which should have gone to Rihanna.

Seattle, Washington – A new device could snip the amount of time a person spends with braces in half. The device was developed by researchers and is currently being tested by a sole 14 year-old with braces. Alyssa Uecker simply bites down on the device every day for 20 minutes. The device sends low-frequency vibration to her teeth, which researchers believe sparks bone remodeling, thus speeding up the straightening process. While tests have shown the device is safe on both adults and children, it has yet to be approved by the FDA.
