Rio de Janeiro – As part of a national AIDS awareness campaign, the Brazilian government will give out 55 million condoms during the country’s annual Carnival celebration. Also part of the campaign is a television spot featuring a talking condom. In 2009, the government handed out almost 500 million condoms nationwide.

Jakarta, Indonesia – A bronze statue of a 10-year-old Barack Obama will be removed from a Jakarta park after strong opposition from citizens. Some 56,000 Facebook users joined an online campaign to rid Menteng Park of the statue. Those in opposition feel that Barack Obama is not a national hero and should not be revered as such. Obama is well-known in Indonesia because of the years he spent there as a child. The statue will be relocated to the school Obama attended while in Jakarta.

Kahta, Turkey – A medical examiner revealed Friday that a 16-year-old killed by her father and grandfather was likely buried alive. Medine Memi allegedly brought dishonor to her conservative Kurdish family by befriending boys. Because such behavior is frowned upon in Memi’s community, family members were pressured by the community to rid themselves of the dishonor, and were motivated enough to kill. No charges have been filed in the case.
