Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Both immigrants holding temporary residency status in the U.S. and foreign citizens hoping to come to the U.S. to work are preparing lottery entries. But rather than winning money, they have the chance to win permanent citizenship to the U.S. The U.S. government-sponsored Diversity Visa Lottery is a 15 year-old program that gives 50,000 foreigners residency. The State Department expects over 12 million registries this year. There are limitations to the contest. Foreigners hailing from overrepresented countries in the U.S, such as Mexico, are ineligible. Countries are taken on and off the ineligibility list every year. A computer will randomly pick 100,000 entries. Afterward, the State Department will reduce that number to 50,000, ensuring that no single country receives more than seven percent of the visas.

New York, New York – Edison Pena, one of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground for 69 days, has decided to participate in the upcoming New York City Marathon. The 34 year-old was invited by the organizers to attend the event as a spectator, but Pena decided to run the 26.2 mile marathon himself. While trapped underground, Pena often jogged through one of the mine’s tunnels. He was forced to stop after rocks began falling throughout the same tunnel.

Staten Island, New York – Five years after the death of their 17 year-old son, Andre and Korisha Shipley are suing the city of New York for emotional distress that was caused by the way the city handled their son’s remains. Two months after Jesse Shipley died,his fellow classmates involved in a forensic science club took a field trip to a morgue. They noticed a brain in a jar with Jesse Shipley’s name on the jar. When their son died, the Shipleys agreed to an autopsy but said they thought he would be buried with all organs intact.
