Creating an Honor Council for students next year can only aid in the process of shaping the school into a disciplined academic foundation. By allowing a student to have a voice when it comes to issues of academic integrity or immoral actions between individuals in the JC community, the Honor Council can help bring the students together.
Every student understands the stress that is placed on themselves and their classmates. With the seven classes that most students take along with countless extracurricular activities and clubs, no student at JC is truly carefree. This adds a level of understanding to the Review Board.
This does not mean it will be smooth sailing for any student who appeals to the Review Board. The students admitted in the Honor Council will be responsible for preserving the integrity of the Honor Pledge.
This responsibility will not be taken lightly. The integrity of JC will be seen through the decisions that these students have to make. This ensures that not every student forced to attend a Review Board will slide by with lenient consequences. Each discrepancy will be seen in comparison with other acts and their resulting punishments, making each decision fair in comparison to the others.
Having students on the Honor Council creates a more equal environment for the students subjected to the Review Board. In the past, students have found the decisions made by the Review Boards questionable, and the Honor Council now allows students to have some power over the fate of their classmates.
JC is constantly striving to uphold the integrity put forth in the Honor Code. This effort puts the student’s dedication to his or her integrity to the truest test. While not allowing students complete control, this does allow them to voice just how strictly each section of the Honor Code should be upheld.
This advance in the Review Board system should allow for positive change for those subjected to it. Who knows more about what a JC student is going through than another JC student?
