With a section of the JC Rulebook dedicated to the uniform policy, it would seem black and white. Wear this shirt with these pants and these leather shoes, and there shouldn’t be any problems, should there?
But a new epidemic is sweeping the girls of JC. Leggings and tights with designs or holes in them are being worn. Students are getting trouble for wearing this legwear under their skirts. Is this fair to the students?
Back in the day, it was frowned upon for women to show their legs, yet at JC, when a girl chooses to cover up at least some portion of her legs it is seen as worse than leaving their legs uncovered. To wear socks which go above the knee is covering up a large portion of the leg, which is generally seen as modest. However, JC holds different beliefs.
These socks are a current fashion trend, which JC looks down upon. Although the socks adhere to the dress code, which requires students to wear socks that are solid black or white, the administration is calling students out for wearing them.
Tights have also become a recent issue. Students have been wearing tights which have holes or designs in them. These tights are a fashion trend but, once again, JC is not fond of them. Students are being told not to wear these types of tights.
Why would JC not like these tights? They are covering up the girls’ legs, making the uniform seem more conservative. However, the administration still does not like them. This fashion trend makes the JC uniform both more fashionable and conservative.
JC should accept these fashion trends, without a doubt. It’s winter, and twenty-two degrees, for heaven’s sake! What’s the harm in girls exercising their individuality?
So the question emerges. I will JC move to accept these new trends or move to ban them further? We are left to wonder what action JC will decide to take against a trend which is doing no harm to the JC community, abides by the dress code, and keeps people warm. How can it be rejected?
