With Power School available to parents, they can see our grades any time they like to. But to get a proper feel for what our classes are really like, our parents need to sit in on our classes. That’s why the idea of a Parents’ Day is perfect.
This year, during Catholic Schools Week, Parent Appreciation Day was on Thursday, Feb. 2. During the day, we prayed for our parents and we were encouraged to show our gratitude at home, but our parents didn’t actually have the opportunity to spend any of the school day with us.
While I think Parent Appreciation Day is a great idea, why not invite parents to come in for the day to see our classes?
Public schools have an American Education Week in November every year sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA). One day during that week parents are invited to see their children’s classes. The parents receive an invitation letter informing them about the details of the day. The day also includes special activities determined by each individual school.
If we were to have a Parents’ Day, it should be filled with activities like Grandparents’ Day was. It was heartwarming to see the number of grandparents that attended mass with their grandchildren on January 30th. Grandparents had the opportunity to worship and eat lunch with their grandchildren, in addition to seeing where they learn. These types of activities should be included on Parents’ Day. I have a special place in my heart for my grandparents, as I’m sure many students do, but I also have a special place for my parents too. Let the parents in on the fun.
If JC wants to capitalize on Parent Appreciation Day, then what better way to show our gratitude by spending the day with them?
