Overrated or Underrated: Black Friday Shopping

Is heading out the day after Thanksgiving really worth it?

Black Friday Shopping has been a staple in many families in the United States for years.

Often, I would find myself watching television or scrolling on social media to learn that a fight broke out in a random Best Buy over a flat screen TV that was 90% off.

Unfortunately, times are changing, and Black Friday deals seem to be getting more underwhelming each year. During the 90s, Best Buy, Target, malls, and clothing shops often advertised 75%, 80%, and 90% discounts. Now, customers find 25%, 30%, and 40% discounts if they are lucky.

Still, the question remains: is Black Friday shopping worth the ordeal? Black Friday shopping is worth it to an extent. I find joy and excitement in waking up early, going out with my sisters and mother and shopping as a Black Friday tradition.

Although prices for items have gone up over the years, I still get nostalgic from the Christmas lights and decorations in all of the stores as well as the music my sisters and I play in the car on the way to our favorite retail stores.

However, there are some stores that are just not worth shopping on Black Friday.
For example, Ulta Beauty had some great discounts and cheap gift bundles in the front of the store to grab people’s attention, but throughout the rest of the store, the discounts ranged from 10-25% off only.

Bath and Body Works also had a “Buy 3, Get 3 Free” discount, but their products are decently expensive to begin with and I rarely buy more than two products from their store. I had a lot of buyers regret after spending so much. Alternatively, there are many amazing Black Friday sales at other stores. South Moon Under had a policy of 30% off everything in store and online.

Additionally, the majority of items at Francesca’s and Macy’s at the Harford Mall were 50% discounted.

However, with the age of technology, there is another way to get good deals for items from the comfort of your own home. Amazon had 30% discounts off of items, and Target and Kohl’s website offered 35-50% discounts on items. Black Friday shopping is a tradition that should never cease.
