During my time at John Carroll, I have experienced many great traditions. From every Spirit Week to finally receiving my JC ring, each adventure has been incredibly special to me.
However, one tradition that stays the same and never fails to disappoint is all of the holiday celebrations. John Carroll does each holiday season exceptionally well. The school finds ways to incorporate unique customs into the school days to highlight each one, whether it’s Christmas or St. Patrick’s Day.
The Patriot, the newspaper you are reading right now, always does holiday features, which are very enjoyable to take part in, from the writing to the editing.
Holidays are so special to Patriots that they voted one of the Spirit Week dress down days as “Holiday Day.” I found that to be very different from our usual themed days, and it really got me excited for the holiday seasons to come.
The prayer services and Masses add a special religious aspect to our holidays as we remember the importance of Christ in our lives.
Everyone’s favorite holiday season at JC is Christmas; I know that it is truly my favorite one.
Christmas time here sets JC really sets us apart from other schools. As our weeks and days countdown to Christmas, the school is filled with excitement and happiness. I love the advisory door decorating contest the most. It is so fun to come up with different themes with my advisory, from traditional movies to an Hawaiian Christmas, I have the best memories of designing the doors we do each year.
It makes it even more significant when I get to introduce the freshman students to that tradition. The pure joy on everyone’s face is so meaningful. However, the competition to win an award makes it even more enjoyable.
The string lights and all the decorations in the hallway make that time of year the best.
The addition of the Festival of Lights last year also makes the Christmas season unique. JC opened its doors to members of the community on the Saturday before break. The school was filled with decorations, a train ride, and numerous trees.
I had the opportunity to volunteer with the SGA, and it was without a doubt my favorite service activity I did. I worked on the train and got to assist young children and their families with seating. It was amazing to dress up and pretend to be one of Santa’s helpers, along with watching The Polar Express on repeat the entire night. I will forever cherish this activity, and I am so excited that it is now part of JC’s regular Christmas season.
Another part of Christmas is the Dance Program’s performance of The Nutcracker. It’s always a pleasure to see, and I love all the dedication that goes into the traditional showcase.
For the smaller holidays, students are greeted in the morning by a visit from a very energetic Patriot, and the SGA or other group passes out candy specific to that holiday.
Sophomores spread love with Valentine’s Day Grams, which consist of a treat and thoughtful note to a friend or faculty member. The Thanksgiving Food Drive in November is also very impactful to take part in.
Despite which holiday season it is, I always have the best time participating in JC’s traditions.
