For many years, homecoming has been the only formal dance inclusive to all grades.
Since the Homecoming dance ended early this year, some seniors did not get to fully experience their last fall dance.
Since Homecoming this year was so early, it did not give people a lot of time to find dates and dresses. Freshmen and transfer students may not have not gotten to know everyone by the time the Homecoming dance came. We need a spring formal dance so everyone has a better chance to be prepared.
If we had a spring formal, the students could invite friends from other schools to introduce them to the John Carroll community.
Private schools are always looking for different ways to raise money. Having more dances would increase the number of people who see the school, therefore, bringing in more money. Even if you don’t stay for the dance, everybody must pay, so it does not matter. New student prospects would want to come to John Carroll because they have more events compared to other schools.
Getting dressed up, taking pictures, and dancing with friends are all exciting events that add to the experience of Homecoming. Having another dance always creates more memories and allows students to have a better high school experience.
The juniors have a Ring Dance, Seniors have Prom, and sophomores have the Pinning Ceremony. Freshmen have nothing to look forward to during the springtime; it makes it harder for freshmen to get though the long school year.
Other schools have other dances throughout the year, including winter and spring formals and other themed dances.
The other side of the argument is that dances take a lot of time to plan. If a spring formal was added, the SGA or other group would need someone to be a DJ, handle decorations, and find a space that can hold many people. The group would also need people to put up and take down decorations as well as chaperones on the night of the dance. This does take quite a bit of time to organize. While this sounds like lots of work, this allows students to earn possible service hours by helping to plan, set up, and take down all of the decorations.
The spring formal could be like a Sadie Hawkins dance, so it could give the girls a chance to ask the boys. We would not have to pay for a space because it could be inside the gym. We could also make students pay for food and drinks to create more profit.
Adding a spring formal it would allow a fun way to celebrate the end of the school year with friends.
