In school, students use technology a horrendous amount. That goes from classwork that teachers assign, to homework, tests, and quizzes. There are so many activities that technology gets used for, but with that, students also tend to get distracted.
Students will spend more time in class playing games on their computers or being on other unrelated websites instead of actually learning and understanding what their teacher is saying.
For some, technology is not an issue, and they can still avoid the temptation and focus on learning and paying attention. For others, it is a major distraction.
Students from different grade levels all have opinions on this topic. Freshman Nick Smith said, “Yes, technology distracts me in class because it is a distraction from the real work you’re supposed to do doing.”
Meanwhile, junior Kyle Benfield said, “It doesn’t distract me because I can block it out and focus on the work I’m supposed to be doing.”
Senior Hunter Kruse said, “It’s a big distraction for students because they spend more time on games than listening and completing their assignments.”
Not only is this a problem for students trying to learn and pay attention, but it is difficult for the teachers, too.
Math Teacher Robert Torres said, “Yes, technology is a distraction to students in the classroom because they are on their phones and not listening in class, or they have earbuds in and are not listening that way.”
Even with all the benefits that technology has for learning, it is very hard to get a student’s 100% attention, especially for long periods of time and in every class that they go through in one day. They may pay attention to one thing and not the other.
