Homecoming should not be the only time all JC students get together to have a fun, formal, dance.
Though the Homecoming Dance is a great tradition all students can look forward to, it is forgotten about halfway through the school year, and there is nothing for all classes to anticipate in the spring.
This year’s Homecoming Dance was in September — very early in the school year when freshmen were still getting used to being in high school in general. Once the dance was over for them and for the sophomores, no major dances were left for the year.
Juniors have the Ring Dance, and seniors have their prom. Underclassmen don’t have a special dance in the second semester, so there should be another one for all grade levels to enjoy at the same time.
This is a great way to socialize with peers for a second time in the school year and to forget about all the second semester stress for one evening by dancing the night away, taking pictures with friends, and enjoying each other’s company.
I know that I look forward to dress shopping for Homecoming almost as much as I do the dance itself. It is exciting to try on different styles of dresses to find that one that is perfect to wear. Doing this for a second time would bring joy and excitement to not only myself, but many other students as well.
Having a second major formal dance during the school year for everyone also allows students to take a step back to be present in the moment and have fun, looking for something special that will leave a lasting impression for a night of fun.
Having a dance in the fall and then again in the spring could almost be considered as a reward for working hard for the first few months for one carefree night to remind us that we are halfway through a semester, and we should keep pushing through. It would bring light and enjoyment to whatever may be going on in a student’s life.
Though you would have to pay for a ticket just like Homecoming, it is worth the money because you are only in high school once, and you will never get these moments back.
Some schools host a winter formal or spring fling dance during the second semester. We could do something like that here, or we could come up with something else creative.
If school dances aren’t for you, it is totally your option whether to attend or not, but a spring formal would serve as a great experience in the final years before becoming an adult that you can spend with your friends and make high school memories that will last a lifetime.
