Singles’ Awareness Day is right around the corner, bringing stress upon everybody, whether they are in a relationship or not. It seems that Valentine’s Day has turned into a day of mourning for those without a significant other or a day of stress for those dating somebody. Although there are those who claim to be above the fray, a significant portion of JC students will find themselves without somebody to love.
Fear not! There are ways to get around Feb. 14 without crying yourself to sleep. If most of your friends are single, try pairing off as friends for a fun filled evening. It doesn’t matter if there are more girls than guys or vice versa, just make it enjoyable and stress-free. Just because you aren’t celebrating romantic love doesn’t mean that you can’t celebrate your friendships.
For girls who can’t bring themselves to go out on Valentine’s Day, this is the perfect opportunity for some pampering. Take the money that you would have spent on a special someone to buy something that you’ve had your eye on for awhile. Taking a short break from your regular routine to enjoy a relaxing bubble bath or watch “The Notebook” will allow you to forget about your single-dom.
On the opposite side of Valentine’s Day is the stress of giving gifts to your significant other. For guys especially, there is a crazy amount of pressure to get the “right” gift.
Girls, instead of making your boyfriend fear your wrath if he gets you the wrong thing, reassure him that you’ll still like him no matter what he gets you, as long as it’s from the heart. Guys, don’t stress. If your girlfriend is going to break up with you over a gift, she isn’t worth your time.
Instead of focusing on what you should and shouldn’t get, focus on how to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company. If you can’t go out on a Tuesday night, plan to do something over the weekend. Don’t make this day about giving and receiving as much as about showing how happy you are with your boyfriend or girlfriend.
Above all else, make this day a happy one. Take the time to tell your favorite people that you care about them and value the time you spend with them. Whether you’re single or dating somebody, make Valentine’s Day a day to spread the love.
