The morning after homecoming dawned cold and rainy. While a majority of JC students were still asleep, the members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams were up at 5 am in order to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure.
Race for the Cure is an annual charity run/walk to raise money for breast cancer research.
This year’s Race for the Cure took place early in the morning on October 18 in Hunt Valley. The men’s and women’s JV and Varsity soccer teams participated in it for team service projects. This was the third year that they had been involved in the race.
The men’s varsity team walked the 5k race, although some from JV ran it. The women’s teams walked the one mile course.
They also helped out the cause by raising money for breast cancer research. The men’s teams raised a total of $3980 and the women’s teams raised $5235.
“After the initial shock of being up at 6 am, the boys were able to realize how many lives are affected by cancer and ultimately felt ‘satisfaction’ from their service,” said assistant men’s soccer coach and history teacher Rodney Johnson
Freshman JV soccer player David Knaide said, “It was hard to wake up so early the morning after homecoming, but the experience turned out to be really rewarding.”
