JC lands fourth place in Alhambra tournament
The men’s varsity basketball team dominated the ‘A’ Conference championship, won the BCL championship, and faced tough competition at the Alhambra tournament this weekend.
The team worked its way up to competing against eight of the East Coast’s top teams from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia in Cumberland, Maryland.
The competition included Gonzaga High School, Bishop Walsh School of Cumberland, Bishop McNamara High School of Forestville, St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, Virginia’s Benedictine, and St. Benedict Prep of New Jersey.
JC landed the fourth-place spot by the end of the tournament. DeMatha Catholic High School, located in Hyattsville, Maryland, beat JC 38-32 and won first place.
The first day of the tournament, Thursday, March 17, JC won their first game against St. Benedict 66-54. During the game against Gonzaga, senior Malcolm McMillan and Jarred Jones had to sit out due to injuries.
“I was concerned but thought it would be a good opportunity for other guys on the team to get valuable big game experience,” coach Tony Martin said.
Senior Ronald Scott tried to fill their shoes by scoring 33 points in a close loss 62-58.
“I had to put the team on my back and I had to try my best to carry me team to a win, but it didn’t work out,” Scott said.
The men’s varsity basketball team is preparing to compete in the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational beginning on March 31 at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Maryland.
