The varsity women’s badminton team smashed the other team on Wednesday April 6 as they won every one of their seven matches in two sets out of three against St. Tim’s School.
The number-one varsity singles player senior Haley Lynch set the tone for the afternoon as she opened with the first match and first win of the day. “It was good to have a win especially after having been gone for so long because of break,” Lynch said, who was one of many team members who went to Ireland and Scotland over spring break.
Senior Meg Kirchner also attended the Ireland and Scotland trip. She said that although there was a long break of no playing, “with St. Tim’s, we generally clean house.”
Kirchner, the number-two varsity singles player, felt very good about her match as well and described her methods of overpowering her opponent. “I use a lot of drop shots to the corners of the court to win. It’s my signature move,” Kirchner said.
Lynch said that she tends to try to move her opponent around the court by placing the birdie in different places. “I really like smashing, too,” Lynch said.
Though Wednesday’s win was rather easy according to the team, the badminton team has their biggest and toughest match-up on Thursday April 7 as they take on Friends School. “It will be our toughest match of the year,” Lynch said.
But through easy wins and tough match-ups, senior Maggie Kinser feels that the team has continued to make progress. “We’ve definitely come together as a team and have grown a lot,” Kinser said.
Varsity and JV coach Tess Gauthier feels the same way and describes the team as being right in the middle of their opponents and on their way to the playoffs. “I believe we’re better than some teams and others are very tough. We’re right in the middle,” Gauthier said.
So far, the team is 2-2 for the season. They have defeated Institute of Notre Dame and St. Tim’s, but they have failed to defeat Notre Dame Prep and St. Paul’s School for Girls. The team has nine more matches left before playoffs begin during the first week of May.
