The Al Cesky Scholarship Award is an honor. It is a $5,000 scholarship that recognizes students for their academics, athletics, participation in the arts, and overall performance in high school. Brian Hunt is the recipient of this award for the first time in over 5 years at JC according to Athletic Director Larry Dukes.
This year, the Al Cesky Banquet was held on Wednesday, May 18 in the Richlin Ballroom. Overall there were 24 nominees for this scholarship. All of the students are service volunteers in their schools, churches, or community. In addition to their academic achievements and extracurricular activities, almost all work part-time.
“The award meant a lot to me. I feel like I’ve been working pretty hard in school and with sports for the past four years so it’s nice to be recognized and for all the hard work to pay off,” Hunt said.
In Hunt’s four years at JC, he played football and ran indoor and outdoor track. He was also involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honors Society, and Student Affairs Council.
In his senior year, he served as a captain of the outdoor track team and led them to a record of 4-2. “Brian is a well-deserving student and has always worked hard. I respect his courage and fortitude,” Athletic Director Larry Dukes said.
Next fall, Hunt is attending University of Maryland to study architecture. “My whole life I’ve enjoyed drawing and art stuff. It’s been my dream for years now, so it was kind of a big deal with my college search and picking the right school,” Hunt said.
“He’s a great choice for the Al Cesky Award. Brian has always been a stand up guy and a hard worker. Ever since
freshmen year he was always the last one to leave the track because he was doing more,” Rob Torres, who coached Hunt for four years on both the indoor and outdoor track teams said.
