The women’s basketball team won the IAAM B Conference championship on Feb. 18, 2012. They beat St. Mary’s 42-38, with freshman Ashley Hunter scoring the last two points in the last 1.7 seconds of the game. The top scorers from JC were seniors Emily Soller with 15 points, Miranda Ripken with eight points, and Maria Edwards with eight points.
Throughout the game, JC never fell behind on the scoreboard, although they were never more than a few points ahead of St. Mary’s. Most of the second half was dominated by fouls, with three points in fouls scored for JC in the last eleven seconds of the game by Edwards and Hunter.
St. Mary’s player Stephanie Lazo missed a foul shot in the last 2.6 seconds of the game. When Hunter was fouled on the rebound and made both of her foul shots, the Patriots were out of St. Mary’s reach. The clock ran out and they became the B Conference champions.
