Things are looking up in Birdland with the overhaul of young and exciting prospects seeking to turn the Orioles franchise around for the better.

As spring training is well underway and Opening Day tomorrow, fans from all around are excited to see another year of development.
When the Orioles announced their entirely-new front office and coaching staff, they entered a rebuild to make the ball club a serious contender once more. The Orioles are on track to do just that in coming years. New general manager, Mike Elias, seems to be just what the franchise needs. He recently rebuilt the Houston Astros, once dubbed the “Lastros,” into a World Series championship team in 2017. Bringing in exciting young prospects such as Adley Rutschman, Greyson Rodriguez, and DL Hall gives O’s fans hope for the future.
There is much room for optimism based off of spring training results thus far. Many of the young prospects have flashed their talent and potential but aren’t quite ready for The Show yet. Their development is of utmost importance to the future of the franchise, and all indications seem to be trending in a positive direction.
Outfielder Ryan Mountcastle was the first of the “rising tide” to appear in the Big Leagues. To the delight of the Orioles faithful, he received an August call up and burst onto the scene batting .333 with five home runs and 23 runs batted in. He goes into the 2021 season as one of the American League Rookie of the Year candidates.
Third year center fielder, Cedric Mullins, has flashed throughout his young career. He is currently batting north of .300 along with veteran first baseman Trey Mancini who is returning after cancer treatments. Mancini looks to be a major leader in the clubhouse. Newcomers Freddy Galvis and Yolmer Sanchez will bring experience to the middle infield on an otherwise young squad.
The pitching staff has seen good things through spring training thus far. The coaches have gotten looks at their young guys to see where they currently belong. The projected starting rotation of John Means, Dean Kremer, Felix Hernandez, Keegan Akin, and Matt Harvey have all seen sky-high ERAs through spring training, which isn’t abnormal for the first few starts. Former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez looks to be a veteran leader to the young hurlers.
Former Orioles announcer Gary Thorne simply said, “Patience, Patience, Patience.” The Orioles in recent years have progressively improved.
This season will most likely not see a winning season, but when the Orioles open the season against the Red Sox tomorrow, Orioles fans all around will be giddy with excitement.
