John Carroll’s equestrian team was able to qualify for Regionals within the first three shows the team had attended.

To qualify, the team needed to earn at least 20 points throughout the season. On February 11, the team traveled to Garrison Forest School where regionals were held.
The day had multiple classes with a varying number of riders per group. The day was divided into “Team” classes and “Individual” classes.

A team class is where one rider per team is to represent the team in each division. This one representative rider is chosen by whomever earned the most points for their division during the entire show season. Individuals could also qualify on their own by earning at least 18 points between the five shows they rode in. Any number of individuals on the team could earn a spot at Regionals if they earned enough points.

This year, a separate championship division was added to the most advanced level of riders. A spot in this division was earned by being selected in the given zone and region as a “Top Scoring Rider.”

Senior Anne Katrin Urzynicok was chosen from JC’s region to compete in this division where she placed Reserve Champion in second.

Anne, a team captain, said, “I really enjoyed getting to ride a bunch of horses and competing with friends on other teams with everyone riding their best.”

The rest of the team showed up to support their teammates and to help with any extra work such as horse holding and getting others ready to ride during the day.

Anne, senior Maggie Tamberino and freshman Emma Kaminski all qualified individually to move onto Zone Finals in Lexington, Virginia.
