The 2023 spring athletic season for the girls’ team was one to remember. Girls track and field, softball and golf all made it to the championships.
Track and golf brought home championship titles while softball fell short to Archbishop Spalding 6-3.
Softball’s in-conference record was 9-1 while overall was 15-4, having a terrific season.
Sophomore Juliana Aragon, catcher for the varsity softball team said, “I think this season went very well, and we started off strong. Being able to take the lead in our conference was important. We worked in our freshmen very well, and they were strong parts of our team. Our championship game went well, and next year we are going to work even harder to take it home.”
Juli added, “Our team works together, and we are built around trust which was important for us to succeed this year.”
For the first time in 40 years, the girls track team managed to secure an IAAM B conference championship.
The team, coached by Michael Monaghan and Robert Torres, started preparing for championships at the beginning of the season.
“Our preparation for the championship meet began with our first workouts. We knew we had the talent to win. We experimented with placing athletes in various events to find the right mix. We were fortunate to have an influx of talented freshmen who were mentored by our top-notch veteran crew,” commented Coach Monaghan.
With this strategy, the coaches were able to maximize scoring for each event and bring home the title.
Some highlights of the championship meet included senior Ella Steck’s first place in the 100m and 200m race, and senior Caroline Kozera’s first place in the 100m hurdle.
Girls golf also claimed a championship title this year as well. The team was 3-0 in the B conference, not losing a single match or pairing within any of their conference matches but were 4-2 overall.
Coach Joseph Scheide commented, “I think it cements our presence in the league. We built a strong program over two plus years and got the reward in the commanding championship.”
Senior Joi Bogan placed first; senior Sydney Harrison placed second; junior Annie Bennett placed third place while sophomore Gianna DeBrigidia placed fourth.
On top of all four making All-Conference, Gianna was rewarded with a character coin. At the beginning of the season each coach was given two IAAM character coins. The coach will present the coin to two opponents during the season that exhibit sportsmanship, respect, and integrity.
