Last year, John Carroll debuted the 1964 Challenge, a fundraiser for athletic teams. This has grown tremendously since its start last year. This season, the fall athletic teams raised a combined total of over $17,000.
The goal of the 1964 Challenge is to raise money that will be used for their own athletic team. Each athlete is challenged to find 10 donors who will each donate $19.64 to their team. The number “1964” comes from the year that JC was founded; the team with the most donors wins the challenge.
This fall, the cheerleading team won the challenge with the most contributing donors and a total of $2,423. The boys soccer team raised the most money with a total of $4,421.
1964 Challenge Coordinator Rachel DeWeese said, “One of the many things that makes our school so wonderful is JC athletics. We have some of the most talented and committed athletes, and the 1964 Challenge aims to support each athlete by helping them raise money for their individual teams.”
The challenge enables friendly competition between athletic teams. Ms. DeWeese said, “JC athletes are tremendous competitors. This is a great way for our athletes to use their competitive spirits to their full potential, both on and off the fields and courts.”
The money that each student-athlete raises goes directly back to their team. The winning team received a Chick-fil-A breakfast.
Cheerleading Coach Shauna Rivera said her team was motivated to raise money for their upcoming winter competition season.
Coach Rivera said, “We will bring in a professional choreographer who will put our competition routine together for us, and we will use the money toward paying for the choreographer.”
“The 1964 Challenge takes place every sports season, fall, winter, and spring. We’re already gearing up for the 1964 Challenge – Winter 2023, and I’m excited to see what our winter athletes will raise for their teams,” said Ms. DeWeese.
