Brooks Robinson, the Baltimore Orioles third baseman for 23 seasons from 1955 to 1977, passed away at the age of 86 on September 26, 2023.
Robinson’s death was all over social media and the news. On October 2, the Orioles held a memorial at Camden Yards to remember him.
JC Baseball Coach Darrion Siler said, “He was an example of class character and was an elite baseball player as well as an amazing human being.”
Robinson was called “Mr. Oriole” as he earned Most Valuable Player awards in 1970, 1964, and in 1966, was a Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer, a National Baseball Hall of Famer, two-time World Series Champion, four time Most Valuable Oriole, 16-time Gold Glove Award winner, and an 18-time All-Star. His number 5 was officially retired on April 14, 1978.
“We try to embody who he was and his character,” Mr. Siler said about the JC team, “We are grateful to him for being a great example and an incredible human being.”
Robinson was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and has had various health issues ever since. On September 26, 2023, he died at his home in Owings Mills from heart disease at the age of 86. The Orioles have put his number on the warehouse to remember him, and the players all have his number on their jerseys.
“His death has impacted us with a heavy heart as it’s the loss of one of the greatest Orioles players of all time. He was a huge, larger than life person,” said Mr. Siler.
