Girls Varsity Volleyball Coach Joe Scheide has a strong passion for what he does.
Mr. Scheide’s volleyball journey began at Loyola Blakefield High school where he played and managed the boys varsity team. A few years later, he then taught there, and the varsity team at the time was seeking an assistant. He stepped up and took this position and held it for three years.
He then moved to JC and started off as the JV boys volleyball coach before switching to being the girls varsity coach.
“Growing up, I found a ton of value in sports and what sports can teach us. I’d like to think that I can help pass that along to the next generation. I also know that a bad coach can ruin a sport for players, so I do my best to be a caring and supportive coach while holding players to a high standard on and off the court,” said Mr. Scheide.
He said that a typical practice depends on what his team needs to work on at the time, consisting of various drills, so they can perfect it to prepare for their upcoming game. He closes out the practice with a 6v6 scrimmage so that the players can work on their weaknesses, but also by having fun and staying locked in on their form and technique.
When Mr. Scheide is not on the court coaching volleyball, he likes to watch sports games like NFL, MLB, and college volleyball or spending time with his fiancée, family, and friends.
Mr. Scheide said that he has grown over the years as a coach by listening to player and parent feedback as well as attending coaching seminars and workshops to ensure that he is up to date on his volleyball skills as well as coaching practices.
Mr. Scheide’s determination to help his players succeed and find meaning and value in the game allows him to thrive in being a coach and a role model.
