Bringing the life back to what is black, white and read all over, senior Kirby Browning plans on “proving people wrong when they say that journalism is a dying profession.”
Her copy-editing skills are legendary, and magical even. She has an intrinsic radar that goes off as soon as a story is posted and, within two minutes, the story will be done. No one is quite sure how, but rumors of her being a copy-editing fairy and using a wand have circulated.
After being a Copy Editor for “The Patriot” her junior year and becoming copy chief as a senior, Browning wants to continue pursuing the class she loved in high school at Elon University in North Carolina, which she chose for its Communications program.
However, despite her excitement for college, she will miss all the things she will be leaving behind in The Patriot room. According to Browning, her most cherished memories are the people on the staff. She will also never be able to forget Editor in Chief Joey Hoff’s infamously cheesy, over-the-top Patriot of the Month presentations that typically included sound effects.
“I will probably miss having the familiarity of everyone around,” Browning said.
Nevertheless, Browning’s love of the journalism class did not stem simply from the sheer number of people. The quality of the staff, not the quantity, made it memorable.
“I will probably miss having the familiarity of everyone around. Mr. I and Mr. A who put up with me, and just being able to come into class with my friends,” Browning said. “And of course, threatening people, “kirb-stomping,” and shoving AP style down everyone’s throats.”
Spoken like a true Copy Editor.
