As they finish their last exams and clean out their lockers, seniors seem closer than ever to graduation. However, one thing stands in the way of a quarter of the senior class: service hours.
According to Outreach Coordinator Tony Martin, there are “a good handful of students who still need to complete the hours. Some of them range from needing one hour to the maximum of 20. Most in that category only need a handful or less,” Martin said.
Although the number of students who still need service hours changes every day, Martin estimates “they’re probably about 60 [students].”
In the past weeks, Martin has sent out “an email blast,” and put announcements about the requirement in the e-update and daily bulletin. In addition, “we’re going to have a little fun with it and create an old western post office most wanted list. This will soon be blown up and posted for all to see,” said Martin. “Some positive peer pressure will encourage those young lads to get their hours in.”
The “Most Wanted” list is now posted outside the entrance to the cafeteria, and the list features the names of all of the students who have not met the service hour requirement of 60 hours.
One of those students, senior Rachel Wilson, needed 16 hours going into the fourth quarter but now only needs three. “I’m lazy. I’m sorry,” Wilson said. “It’s not stressful, but I’d rather not do them right now.”
After being e-mailed by Martin, Wilson met with him and devised her own plan to make up the service. “The [responsibility] is a little bit on the students to find and initiate finding the services that they want to do,” Wilson said.
Despite the number of seniors who lack the required hours, Martin still doesn’t “anticipate any student’s [not graduating because of service hours]. I may have to personally hunt a few of them down, and I’m willing to do so,” Martin said.
“[Not fulfilling the service hour requirement] is the dumbest reason not to get your diploma,” Principal Paul Barker said.
