The class of 2011 won the Powderpuff game for the second year in a row. The seniors dominated the field, 20-14, against the junior girls, class of 2012.
Within the first two minutes, senior Amanda Wolfe threw a deep pass down the field to senior Annie Thomas, placing them just outside the goal line. Senior Emily Heller finished the drive with a carry into the end zone, bringing the score to 6-0 seniors.
The juniors got the ball into the seniors’ territory. On second and goal, junior Miranda Ripken ran the ball in for a touchdown. Junior Talia Kahoe made her way into the end zone, scoring an extra two points for the juniors, putting them in the lead at 8-6.
Before the first half was over, junior Emily Soller snuck her way over the goal line making the score 14-6 juniors.
The juniors received the ball and fumbled it close to their own goal line. The seniors recovered the ball on the juniors’ ten yard line, but the junior defense was able to regain control of the ball. Unable to make a play, the juniors kicked the ball back to the seniors.
In the 24th minute, senior Faye Brust rushed the ball into the end zone. The game was now within two points at 14-12 juniors. The juniors got the ball back and Kahoe carried the ball, but was taken down along with three other players near the junior sideline.
With 2:39 left on the clock, the seniors lined up for third and goal. Heller ran the ball in for the touchdown and also scored the extra two points, bringing the score to 20-14.
With under two minutes left in the game, the juniors attempted to tie the score. As time ran out, the referees threw a flag on the field. The flag will remain a mystery because no one could figure out what referee Jacob Hollin was saying. This gave the juniors one more chance, but Ripken’s pass was broken by Wolfe in the end zone.
“We went in too cocky. They [the juniors] scared me the last couple minutes. But, it was awesome. It will go down in history [the fact that 2011 won two years in a row],” Wolfe said.
“It made us want to beat them [the seniors] more,” junior player Samantha English said in regards to the seniors’ chance of winning twice.
“[I am] not upset. Going in against seniors who had won last year, everyone expects them to win. Very proud, not at all disappointed,” junior coach Gary Scholl.
