Varsity men’s basketball team fries Curley, 60-42
The men’s varsity basketball team did it again, frying the Archbishop Curley Friars on Monday 60-42.
The spotlight was on sophomore Mike Owona, who was a frequent scorer, scoring six points in the first quarter. Freshman Kamau Stokes and senior Ronald Scott kept their three-point shooting tradition going with one three-pointer from Scott and two from Stokes, which contributed to the Patriots’ 12 points by the end of the quarter.
The Friars kept themselves in the game with seven points in the quarter that came from three foul shots made by their lead scorer Dexter Miles and two-pointers made by Tyler Burton and Gary Wade.
In the second quarter the Patriots stepped their game up with eight points from senior Jarred Jones, nine points by Scott and another two-pointer from Owona.
The Friars tried their best to not let the game slip between their hands by staying alive with a two- and three-pointer from Nile Harrison and two foul shots by Ben Huff. However, they could not get a tight enough grip, and the first half ended with the Patriots leading by 13 points, at 30-17.
Curley began to close the gap with six points from Miles and two foul shots made by Huff in the first part of the third quarter. Harrison and Burton also contributed to the score, both scoring a two-pointer.
However, the Patriots came back to widen the gap. Scott scored five points, and Owona, senior Malcolm McMillan and sophomore Rodney Elliott each scored two points to bring the score to 41-29, JC.
In the fourth quarter, the Friars continued to fight, but it was clear who the winner would be. McMillan scored seven points, with two two-pointers and three foul shots that easily found their way into the net.
Stokes and Jones each had a two-pointer and a foul shot. Scott, Owona, and junior Marcus James ended the Patriots’ scoring by each making a two pointer. Huff added five points, Miles two points, and Burton three points.
In the last few seconds of the game, the Friars’ Demonya Womack made a three point. However, the points did little to affect the outcome of the game, as the Patriots came away with a 60-42 victory.
The Patriots remain undefeated, 5-0, and will play their next game at Mount Carmel on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
