Speech Creatures take home victories

Senior Rebecca Kotula reads aloud during a Speech and Debate tournament. Kotula placed first in the Prose category.

The Speech and Debate team, better known as The Speech Creatures, finished their season on a winning note after competing in finals at Havre de Grace High School on March 21.

“All in all it has been a very successful year for the Speech Creatures,” Speech and Debate Moderator Bob Schick said.

According to team captain junior Megan Greig, this year at finals, every one of the six events in four different categories that JC entered had one member place.

“I’m surprised every year by the incredible amount of talent displayed by each team member not just at finals, but at every tournament we go to,” Greig said.

Six Speech Creatures placed first, including junior Jessica Clingerman taking First in Declamation, senior Rebecca Kotula in Prose, juniors Megan Greig and Margaret McGuirk in Team Debate, and sophomores Billy Jump, Ashley Hunter, and Hanna LeBuhn in Readers’ Theater.

Continuing with top finishes junior Kayla Bynion placed second in Declamation and juniors Casey Reil and Hope Kelly placed second in Readers’ Theater. Sophomores Justin Hawkins and Austin Eiseman took home third in Team Debate category.

“I would say this year we did great. We took home a title in almost every event, and team debate did great. We took home first and third. My only regret this year was that I didn’t join debate club last year,” sophomore Austin Eiseman said.
