Classes join together to celebrate the return of full JC Spirit Week
October 31, 2021
It’s a week that many in the John Carroll community look forward to each year. It’s a week with special activities and dress down days in which the students, teachers, and staff celebrate Homecoming.
Last year at this time, due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, students were in the building at 25%, and participation was limited to which day of the week students attended. The 2020 Homecoming Dance and Game were also canceled.
This year the school community was able to enjoy five full days of Spirit Week. While some modifications had to be made throughout the week due to the pandemic, more of the overall normalcy returned.
Spirit Week began on Monday, October 18 and ended on Friday, October 22. The Homecoming Dance itself was on the following night.
Dress down themes included Class Color, Decades, Tropical/Tourist, Age, and School Color. For Decades Day, classes voted for their preferred decades. Seniors dressed in the style of the ‘80s, juniors in the ‘70s, sophomores in the ‘00s, and freshmen in the ‘90s. Age Day saw the seniors dressed as senior citizens, juniors as middle-aged business people, sophomores as toddlers/small children, and freshmen as babies.
With seniors in their green and juniors in their blue, the Powderpuff game returned on Monday. At halftime, a few freshmen and sophomores represented their classes in a field goal competition.
Class volunteers painted windows in the hallway next to the Dresher Academic Wing after school on Tuesday. The four windows captured the personalities of the four grade levels.
Patriots celebrated the Wednesday of Spirit Week with a cookout lunch outside. For $5, students could purchase a hamburger or hot dog, chips, cookies, and water. Members of the staff assisted in serving the lunch.
On Thursday, Academic Team Moderator Chris Deaver hosted a Quiz Bowl competition between members of the JC Academic Team and the faculty. The competition was taped ahead of time and shown during Advisory.
Also on Thursday, students had the opportunity to participate in a Ring Hunt. Throughout the day, a cardboard version of the John Carroll ring was hidden in various places in the school. Students were sent clues, and those who found the ring were awarded Wawa gift cards.
To close out Spirit Week on Friday, a pep rally was held outside. Having the pep rally outside was one of the changes that had to be made due to the continued existence of the pandemic.
During the pep rally, both the band and the cheerleaders performed, and the fall athletic teams were introduced. Members of the athletic teams then competed against each other in a series of games on the field.
