“Under the Stars” was the theme of this year’s annual Homecoming dance on the evening of Saturday, September 30. The theme was fitting since the dance was literally under the stars.
Two years ago, the dance was held outside due to the pandemic because dances would have had too many people in one place. While the dance was held inside last year, the decision was made to return to the outdoor location. The idea of moving it outside was decided by the Student Government Association officers and representatives last June.
Over the summer, SGA members submitted possible ideas for the dance theme. These ideas were placed on a ballot for a final vote in the days after the SGA Summer Leadership Workshop and were voted upon by SGA members from all four grade levels.
SGA Co-Moderator Anthony Davidson explained that the early ballot was necessary because Homecoming was earlier than usual. Last year’s dance was closer to the end of October.
On the morning of the dance, approximately 20 students assisted in decorating the parking lot. Decorations included balloon columns and centerpieces, twinkling star lights, and stars on trees. Heat lamps were placed close to the tables in case the temperature became chilly.
Students checked into the dance at tables at the two entrances of the parking lot. Tables and chairs were located in the center of the parking lot, and the DJ and dance floor were on the far side of the area.
A large cluster of students danced throughout each song. The SGA selected Baltimore Premier Event Solutions for the DJ, and overall feedback about the DJ was very positive. The company arrived at JC in the morning to set up the stage and the lighting.
A photo booth was set up inside so that students could take pictures with their friends to remember the event. A snack table was outside which included water, fruit snacks, candy and chips.
Senior Connie Fritz said, “It was a nice night, and it was fun just to hang out with friends and enjoy myself.”
“It was put together well, and the music was great,” said senior Mitchell Gier.
“The option is open to do it again next year outside depending on the timing, weather, and students,” said Dr. Davidson.
Dr. Davidson said that neither he nor Mrs. Hall received any negative complaints on the dance itself from the students.
