Screen “heartthrobs” are crashing theaters this weekend in the premieres of “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” “Safe House,” and “The Vow.” AMC Loews and Regal will be bursting with hoards of girls falling all over themselves to see “The Vow” as well as hoards of “Stars Wars” fans dying to view “The Phantom Menace” in 3D.
“Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”
A sequel to “Journey to the center of the Earth,” “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” returns with Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) traveling to another place encircled with legends. He takes his step-father (Dwayne Johnson) to look for his grand-father on what is believed to be the island of Atlantis. The thrill ride looks to include adorable tiny elephants, giant lizards, and awkward “peck-pops of love” (see the trailer!) that will keep movie-goers’ eyes locked to the screen. Because the film is in 3D, the best place to see it would be at the IMAX Theater in AMC Loews in White Marsh. There will be breath taking views and many scenes, like in “Avatar,” where IMAX will definitely make a positive difference.
“Safe House”
Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington star in the action thriller, “Safe House,” that is sure to keep movie goers on the edge of their seats. The film follows Matt Weston (Reynolds) a “housekeeper” of a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa. As a “housekeeper” Weston must watch over criminals that the CIA wants to watch over. The house holds prisoners of the CIA and is rarely occupied until Tobin Frost (Washington) an ex-intelligence officer is brought in. Weston, who has been trying to move up in the ranks, takes on the challenge as Frost plays mind tricks on him about his superiors. Frost, who is far more mentally and physically skilled than Weston, is seen as a threat to the CIA. This film will entertain anyone who loves action, Ryan Reynolds, or both.
“Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace 3D”
“Stars Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” is being re-released in 3D this weekend. A lot of movies are being re-released in 3D but “Star Wars” is worth the $14 being shelled out at the register. The fight scenes and explosions that many love can only enhance the film. This is also another movie to see in AMC Loews because of the better quality in 3D.
“The Vow”
If you aren’t up for action or adventure this weekend then put “The Vow” at the top of your weekend to-do list. Although the film seems like it is based off of some Nicholas Sparks novel, the “aw” factor is all based off of a true story. Channing Tatum, from another Sparks based film, plays Leo, a man trying to get his wife (Rachel McAdams) to fall in love with him after she loses five years of her memory as a result of a car crash. Most girls wouldn’t mind waking up and finding out Channing Tatum is their husband, but McAdams will surely bring her great acting chops to the film to make it all believable.
