Every two weeks, the Patriot will randomly pick a student from the directory, find out more about his or her life, and prove that every student has a story.
By the age of nine, moving from one historic house to another and having random strangers ask for tours of her home were normal for junior Adriana Baker. However, seeing a grown man dressed as Abraham Lincoln reciting the Gettysburg Address by heart was definitely out of the ordinary.
The Lincoln impersonator was asking for a tour because Baker lived in Tudor Hall, the house formerly inhabited by John Wilkes Booth. “It was really neat [to live in the house] because of the history behind it,” Baker said.
Baker’s parents like to buy older, sometimes historical houses and renovate them. Even though Baker moves out of the house after the renovations are finished, she still gets to stay in the same schools because most of the houses are in Harford County.
Baker and her family have lived in seven houses and Tudor Hall was Baker’s favorite house to live in. “It was the coolest house to live in because it was neat, but strange at the same time. The house itself was a lot of fun to live in because, when we were younger, my brother and I had a lot of room to just run around and play,” Baker said.
Though the houses were interesting, Baker said that, as a child, it was hard to move around and start life somewhere new. “It was tough starting from scratch, and the houses were not always in the best conditions,” Baker said. “I was upset [with moving] because I was little, and little kids do not like change.”
It may have been hard to move at first, but it came easier after a while for Baker. “I got used to [moving],” Baker said.
Baker’s friends thought that moving and renovating houses was very interesting. “When my friends found out about it, they thought it was really cool. They also asked if it was bothersome,” Baker said.
“It is really cool to find out about the history of the house and the people who lived there before. It is also neat to find out the purpose of the house before we move into it,” Baker said.
