Each week, “The Patriot” will offer insight and analysis about the latest episode of “Lost.” There are spoilers present in this, so read with caution. For a full summary, check out the official website of “Lost.”
Jacob as a father figure
Kate: Illana has an almost unnatural relationship with Jacob. How did she develop such a connection with him? Jacob must have protected her or guided her, maybe in the same way that he worked with Richard.
Allison: Illana seems to feel like she owes Jacob something. Why that is, I’m not sure.
Ben and his father
Kate: So, the island still exists in this sideways universe. I guess it hasn’t always been under water. Ben’s a bright guy if he has a doctorate in European History.
Allison: Ben and his father believe that their lives would be better if they stayed on the island. Why would they leave?
Ben and Alex
Kate: He has a super awkward relationship with Alex. It must be a crime for her to just show up at his house.
Allison: Clearly, they have known each other for some time if she is alright with showing up at his house. They seem to get along really well. He’s weirdly protective of her, almost fatherly.
Kate: Maybe because the characters maintain similar relationships without the island? He still thinks of himself as a father figure to Alex because he was like that on the island, even though he was a really sucky father at best.
Ben’s new job:
Kate: Ben is as manipulative in the sideways universe as he is on the island. He has a strange way of getting people to do exactly what he wants and using circumstances to his advantage.
Allison: He is using the connections of his predecessor, which he did on the island, and the well being of Alex. The last time he did that, in alternate reality, Alex died.
Kate: Hmm, it looks like the principal is as bad as Ben. Ben seems to have learned his lesson though and put Alex before acquiring power. It’s actually completely adorable.
Allison: Ben took the selfless route and made it seem that he could hold it over the principal’s head and still get Alex that letter of recommendation.
Candidates
Kate: What if the six people left decide to be candidates? Would they just share the responsibility or can only one be it? Is there a reason that Illana isn’t a candidate? Maybe Jacob gets close to certain people to help them lead in the candidates.
Allison: I really don’t get the candidates thing, but the way she said that its Kwon, could it be their daughter?
Kate: That would be a great twist! The only problem would be that she’s a little young to protect the island. And they’d have to find a way to get off the island to get her. However, the MiB is telling Ben that he is a candidate? He’s not one of the six names. The MiB is as manipulative as Ben.
Richard
Kate: I’m not even going to lie, Richard is slightly attractive. Even with the creeper eyeliner.
Allison: I love the eyeliner and I say that every single episode. Richard doesn’t want anyone trusting Jacob. But I don’t understand why he has to die!
Kate: Exactly! What did Jacob do to lose the trust of Richard? I always assumed that they had a good relationship, but I guess not. I think they just confirmed that Jacob was a slave or passenger on the Black Rock…
Allison: I think Richard came on the Black Rock. I think it was the ship the Jacob brought when we see him interacting with the MiB during season 5. I really don’t want Richard to die.
Kate: I guess that means all of the candidates don’t age as well. We just haven’t seen them over a long enough time span to see a difference. And if Richard was touched, then he must be a candidate. But I want to know why his name was crossed out. Seriously, can we please find out more about Richard’s back story?
Jack’s perspective
Kate: For once, Jack is trusting fate. If he was taking his usual scientific approach, he wouldn’t have trusted that he and Jacob would survive. Is this signaling a change of pace in the show? Jack is going to embrace the idea that there is a greater purpose that he needs to fulfill and that he cannot predict everything that is to come.
Allison: Jack clearly has found some kind of understanding of Jacob and the island and it’s about time! Maybe the lighthouse enlightened him. I think that maybe for the first time he’s reached an understanding of himself, which is a really big step for him.
Submarine
Kate: Dear God, what is Widmore up to now? Can he please just leave the island alone for once? I’d also like to mention how incredibly fake that water looked when they showed the sub.
Allison: Have a mentioned I hate Widmore? No? Well, I hate Widmore.
