Corinne Bailey Rae released her new album, “The Love,” on Jan. 25. The album contains combined covers from differing genres of artists and is not Rae’s normal neo-soul genre. The album had such potential but with the cover songs, they quickly bring the album down.
The first song off of the album, “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” is a cover originally by Prince. Rae doesn’t change much of the song. She sings with a high-pitched voice just like Prince. The only difference I can hear is that Rae’s version is more instrumental.
Rae keeps the pattern of cover music going with “Is this Love?” This song was originally by Bob Marley. Rae takes the reggae out of the song and inserts a more sultry feeling to it, which I think improves the song.
Her next song, “My Love,” was a song originally done by Paul McCartney and the Wings. Of course, Paul does it better. Rae inserts a type of sadness in the song that doesn’t need to be there. If she ever did a music video for this song, I imagine there would be crying.
Rae’s next song is “Low Red Moon” from Belly. I have to say that out of all of the songs she does on the album, this would have to be my favorite. It has a nice rhythm combined with good lyrics. I’m sure Belly doesn’t mind her remake either.
“Que Sera, Sera” (Whatever Will Be, Will Be) is a Doris Day cover. The song contains such sadness.
Rae’s album “The Love” isn’t a good album, or a good combination of songs. If she was going to do a new album, she should have done her own songs, which are usually so much better and obviously more original.
