Fab Tunes: Carly Rae Jepsen’s new album not worthy of ‘Call Me Maybe’ fame

Fab Tunes: Carly Rae Jepsens new album not worthy of Call Me Maybe fame

Total Album Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Admit it. We’ve all sung “Hey I just met you, and this is crazy; but here’s my number, so call me maybe?” while making the phone shape with our hands and holding it up to our ear. The artist behind the song, Carly Rae Jepsen, is now trying to live up to the hype of her uber popular hit with her new album, “Kiss.”

Although none of the tracks stay in your mind as much as “Call Me Maybe” does, Jepsen does a good job of maintaining the bubblegum pop sound in every song. The worst song, called “Tiny Little Bows,” is a major letdown even though it is the first track on the album. The lyrics are very scattered and simply not interesting.

The songs “Good Time” featuring Owl City and “Beautiful” featuring Justin Bieber have a nice melody, and Jepsen’s voice fits nicely with her collaborators, making them the better tracks on the CD.

The best song on the album by far is “Heart is a Muscle.” It’s the only track that is slow, showing Jepsen’s true natural singing abilities. The lyrics are also very thought-out, a far cry from the album’s first song.

All of the other tracks are just alright, not bad, but not fantastic either. Although opening for Justin Bieber on his Believe Tour will give her much exposure, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Kiss” is really nothing special.

Below is my breakdown of the tracks:

  1. “Tiny Little Bows”- 2 stars
  2. “This Kiss” – 3 stars
  3. “Call Me Maybe” – 3.5 stars
  4. “Curiosity” – 3.5 stars
  5. “Good Time” ft. Owl City – 4 stars
  6. “More than a memory” – 3.5 stars
  7. “Turn Me Up” – 2.5 stars
  8. “Hurt So Good” – 3 stars
  9. “Beautiful” ft. Justin Bieber – 3.5 stars
  10. “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” –  4 stars
  11. “Guitar String/Wedding Ring” – 2.5 stars
  12. “Heart Is A Muscle” – 4.5 stars
  13. “Drive” – 2.5 stars
  14. “Wrong Feels So Right” – 3.5 stars
  15. “Sweetie” – 3 stars
  16. “Almost Said It” – 4 stars
