Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255” raises suicide awareness

National Suicide Prevention Week was Sept. 10 through Sept. 16, but rapper Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255” about suicide prevention continues to have a lasting impact on fans all over the world since its release on April 28.

This year, mental health and suicide, along with awareness and prevention of mental health disorders, have been major focal points for popular media, such as Netflix’s TV series “13 Reasons Why” and more recently,  Logic’s song titled “1-800-273-8255” featuring Alessia Cara and Khalid.

“1-800-273-8255” is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline phone number. The song details the story of a Lifeline caller who wants to commit suicide. The start of the song includes the powerful lyrics, “I’ve been on the low/I been taking my time/I feel like I’m out of my mind/It feel like my life ain’t mine/Who can relate?”

These first few lines let listeners know that they are not the only ones who may be struggling with their mental health. Feeling like you aren’t in control of your mind or your life is how Logic describes struggling with mental health issues.

In an interview with Genius, an online company that analyzes music lyrics, Logic explained how he found courage to use his voice to speak about important topics. “Then it hit me, the power that I have as an artist with a voice,” he said.

According to the Lifeline’s data, Google searches for the Lifeline’s phone number increased 100 percent on April 28. It saw a smaller increase on the album release day and has continued to see 25 percent higher searches since the song’s release.

On July 12, Logic posted an Instagram picture of data that the Lifeline had collected about the effects of the song. A press release about the song’s impact was issued by the Mental Health Association of New York City (MHA-NYC) in addition to a blog on the MHA-NYC website.

In the blog, MHA-NYC states that “Logic has addressed suicide thoughtfully and creatively to inspire fans to seek help and find hope.”

On the other hand, some of the data can be attributed to listeners curiously calling the number. However, to some callers’ surprise, dialing the number helped alleviate some emotional distress. The Lifeline reported “users searching our phone number on Google … in conjunction with the terms ‘lyrics,’ ‘logic,’ and ‘suicide.’”

Many crisis call centers said they received calls from people mentioning Logic’s song, and some of them were experiencing suicidal thoughts. The Lifeline’s data suggests that there were 100,000 more visits to the Lifeline website in April and May than on average.

Logic explained in the same interview with Genius that fans told him his music saved their lives. “I wasn’t even trying to save your life. Now what could happen if I actually did?” Logic said. His album, which contains the hit song “1-800,” is about shedding light on everyone’s struggles, including his own, and is titled “Everybody.”

Logic has been on tour performing in cities all across the U.S. On Aug. 27, Logic performed “1-800” with suicide survivors joining him on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. As of Sept. 23, the music video has 61 million views.
