‘Jennifer’s Body’ combines horror and comedy

With Halloween coming up this weekend, ‘Jennifer’s Body’ is a great horror movie to put you in the spirit of the holiday. The movie has the perfect amount of humor and horror, and in the past few years has become a cult favorite.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ was released in 2009 and was directed by Karyn Kusama. The film only made about $6.8 million dollars during the first weekend of release and has a 46% Rotten Tomatoes score. Despite this, the film currently has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon Prime and has a large fan following.
The movie follows Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, played by Amanda Seyfried, as she grows concerned for her best friend Jennifer Check, played by Megan Fox, who has begun to act strangely after a traumatic incident at a concert.
The film opens with Jennifer and Needy excited to see an up-and-coming band, Low Shoulder, perform in their small town. Jennifer flirts with the band’s lead singer, which annoys Needy since she finds him creepy.
During the concert, a fire starts and Jennifer and Needy evacuate the venue along with the band. They are some of the only survivors of the fire, and in the confusion, Jennifer leaves with the band while Needy drives home alone.
When Jennifer and Needy are reunited, Jennifer begins behaving strangely, and Needy is concerned that something has happened to her, but everyone assures her that they are both struggling with trauma from the fire.
Over the next few months, things in Needy and Jennifer’s small town get weird. Boys are being found dead, the band Low Shoulder has become super famous out of nowhere, and Needy is convinced that Jennifer is connected to all of it.
Jennifer’s Body is a great movie to watch with friends or by yourself in preparation for Halloween or when you want a funny horror movie.
As someone who tends to avoid super scary horror movies, I was still able to enjoy Jennifer’s Body because it wasn’t too scary and was filled with suspenseful moments.
The movie has mostly grown popular in recent years due to the outfits worn by Jennifer throughout the film. Olivia Rodrigo referenced some of the most iconic outfits and scenes of the movie in her music video for ‘Good 4 U,’ and I have a feeling we will see a lot of Jennifer Check’s on Halloween this year.
The movie’s popularity has also grown due to the somewhat feminist themes throughout it. The movie features complex female characters and a theme of revenge against oppression. Although some would argue that Jennifer’s Body was not intended to be a feminist film, it still is an interesting perspective to think about.
Jennifer’s Body is rated R and recommended for older viewers. You can stream it on Amazon Prime.
