Lightening fails to strike twice with ‘Thor Love and Thunder’

Film Review

Thor Love and Thunder is a summer movie released on July 8, 2022 and directed by Taika Waititi.

The movie itself made $302 million globally, but despite the high numbers, Thor Love and Thunder has had low reviews on Rotten Tomatoes at a staggering 65%. Its predecessor, Thor Ragnarök, scored a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The ratings for the movie were so bad that the next Thor movie will be directed by an entirely different person.

The plot of the movie takes place after the events of Avengers Endgame where Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, has finally gotten out of his depressive state. Later on in the movie, Asgardian children are kidnapped by Gorr The God Butcher, played by Christian Bale because Gorr is trying to reach Thor so he can achieve his goal of murdering all of the gods. The reason for Gorr’s motives is because of the death of his daughter, which he blames the gods for.

Thor goes on a rescue mission with his old lover Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman,as well as King Valkyrie, and Korg.

The ending of Thor Love and Thunder is sad, but it opens up new beginnings for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the end of the movie, Gorr makes it to eternity using Storm Breaker, which is Thor’s weapon, and almost wishes for the end of all gods before seeing Thor kneeling down next to a dying Jane Foster who is succumbing to her cancer.

Jane Foster eventually dies and is sent to Valhalla, while Thor and Gorr’s daughter develop a surrogate father and daughter relationship.

Overall, the movie has its ups and downs. In my opinion, the reason the movie failed was because it focuses too much on comedy and never really takes things seriously.
