Maryland boasts popular destination location

Ocean City was founded in 1875 by Giovani de Verannzo, a Florentine explorer and is one of the most popular places in Maryland to vacation.

Ocean City is filled with fun activities to do all summer long. Its beach stretches along the entire coast and has the Assawoman Bay on the other side.

In 1933, a storm came through Ocean City, and it opened a channel connecting the ocean and the bay together, now called the Ocean City Inlet. Engineers came in and made the inlet permanent for boats to come in and out.

Now, Ocean City has become one of the East Coast’s most premiere sport fishing destinations. They hold some of the most competitive competitions, like the White Marling Open.

If you’re not into fishing, there are multiple places to boat all around Ocean City. The banana boat is a raft that gets pulled behind a boat in the ocean. The goal is to stay on as long as you can.

Ocean City is not only known for its fishing and boating but also its boardwalk. The Ocean City Boardwalk was created in 1902 by hotel owners who wanted to connect a walkway for their guests. When high tide came, they would roll up the boardwalk and store it so it wouldn’t get taken away. By 1910 a permanent boardwalk was built.

Over the past 120 years, the Boardwalk has been redone about three times, the last redone in 2013. The Boardwalk is three miles long and runs from the Inlet to 32nd Street. The beach itself in Ocean City is 10 miles long, and just this past year, they pumped sand from the ocean and redid the entire beach.

Ocean City Beach Patrol is one of the best. They have about 92 chairs along the beach and 17 crew: each crew has five to six chairs. The lifeguards are on the beach from 10 am to 5:30 pm every day during the season.
