Enjoying trick-or-treating safely

Halloween is a holiday filled with delicious candy and fun costumes.

Over the years, parents have expressed that while Halloween activities, such as trick-or-treating, are fun, they can also be quite dangerous.

The media provide parents with a sense of worry as some outlets have said that candy could be poisonous as they are given out by complete strangers from unknown neighborhoods, and the candy even could include broken glass. Thus, safety is a big aspect of Halloween for trick-or-treaters.

Trick-or-treating can have set rules while still being an enjoyable night. Even teenagers can go out and have fun collecting candy.

One big rule for teens relates to walking at the night. Running down hills with friends is very fun, but Halloween isn’t the best time for it. It is dark, and you could trip, leading to your getting severely hurt. Running could also startle others if you sprint directly at them. Don’t worry, you will still get tons of candy, but just take your time.

As trick-or-treating happens at night, it’s very important to either carry a flashlight or walk near streetlamps. Flashlights provide excellent lighting and can shine very far. If a flashlight is not accessible, then streetlamps are just as sufficient.

Bright lights make it easier for drivers to see you, and it allows you to identify your friends behind those ghoulish costumes.

Having your phone on you is also helpful, but only use it for communication.

If you are constantly looking at your phone and not at what’s in front of you, bad things could happen.

Costumes are a lot cooler to see in person, so just put your phone in your bag. Only pull it out to update your parents about your current location and what time you will be home, etc.

Finally, only trick-or-treat in the neighborhoods you and your parents discussed. It will provide parents with a sense of relief knowing where you are. Halloween is a great holiday, but make sure to enjoy it in the safest ways possible. Enjoy your trick-or-treating tonight. You are never too old.
