The Battle of the Apple Pies

Apple Pie Annihilation: McDonald’s vs Popeyes

The Battle of the Apple Pies

Madison Elliott, News Editor

Pie is a fall time classic dessert. Apple pie with cinnamon is delicious and warm as it gets a little colder, the wind picks up, and the leaves start falling. Fast food restaurants have jumped on this trend and have begun to sell convenient little pies on-the-go. Grab a quick mini pie for those who want dessert at any point of the day.

TASTE

McDonald’s: The taste is good. The pie is sweet like most pies are, and the crust is nice and flakey. The apple chunks tasted okay; the texture is something I personally do not like. This pie had an intense apple flavor.

Popeyes: The taste was immaculate. It was a perfect mix of soft crust, light apple flavor, and a hint of cinnamon — definitely not too sweet, but still a very nice flavor. Simple, but just right. There were no apple chunks in the filling as it was very smooth.

PRICE

McDonald’s: The price is $1.00, which is reasonable for the pie and very cheap for this warm treat.

Popeyes: This pie is $1.79. Once again, a fair price for the quick pie.

LOOK

McDonald’s: The pie comes in a convenient little box. The pie slides right out of. This pie came out looking a little crispy, but it has a nice crisscross pattern along the top and some apple filling oozing out.

Popeyes: This pie is quite plain, being a simple rectangle, but no leakage of filling. This box had nice orange artwork on a white background.

ASSESSIBILITY

McDonald’s: The closest McDonald’s is seven minutes from John Carroll or 1.8 miles. It is a simple drive right into the town of Bel Air.

Popeyes: The closest Popeyes to JC is a six-minute drive or 1.8 miles. It’s a quick and easy drive after a long school day.

OUR WINNER IS: Popeyes! When comparing the two, taste is one of the largest components. Popeyes was delicious and sweet without being excessive unlike McDonald’s which had just too strong of a flavor. This pie is only a couple of cents more than McDonald’s, but it is well worth the extra 79 cents. The presentation could be improved, but it does not influence the rating much. The distance from JC is also just about the same, so easy accessibility is achieved.
