In 2007, Disney released Enchanted’ a story about a princess heroine named Giselle who travels to New York City to find her “happily ever after.”

Now, fifteen years later, the same cast is back in a live-action movie, Disenchanted.
Giselle is married and has two children, Morgan and Sofia. They still lived in New York, but Giselle and her husband want a better life for their children. After much thought, they decide to move to a new city called Monroeville.

Once they arrive at their new home, Giselle questions her family’s happiness. Her husband is miserable during his commute to work, and her daughter avoids her at all costs. Giselle tries to wish for a new life, one full of dancing, laughter, and happiness — a perfect fairy tale life.

However, everything goes wrong when the town is transformed into a place known as “Monrolasia.” At first, all seems fine. The townsfolk are dancing, and the entire place is transformed with bright colors. Giselle then finds herself enjoying a new haunting behavior lifestyle. She soon realizes that she is turning into a wicked stepmother.

With the clock ticking to become her normal self again, Giselle enlists help from unlikely friends.

This movie is overall satisfactory. I feel as though it is hard to follow certain scenes, and occasionally, it is jumbled around. However, the costumes are elegantly executed. The environment also does a nice job of capturing the fairy tale feel.

The new side of Giselle is also interesting to watch. The clash of dark magic and goodness is undoubtedly an approach I wasn’t expecting. Disney does a good job with this movie, but it does not live up to the original.

Disenchanted can be streamed on Disney+ and is rated PG.
