Netflix released an Addams Family spin-off that is being directed by Tim Burton.

Released on November 23, Wednesday, a comedy horror show, stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia, and Luis Guzmán as Gomez. The movie also stars Christina Ricci as Mrs. Thornhill. Ricci also happened to play Wednesday in the 1991 version of The Addams Family.

The eight-episode series begins with Wednesday getting kicked out of her public school for putting piranhas in the pool during a boys’ water polo practice, a sick revenge for them making fun of her little brother Pugsley.

Morticia and Gomez decide to enroll Wednesday in their alma mater, Nevermore Academy. Nevermore is a school for outcasts, specifically three distinct groups of outcasts: sirens, psychics, and werewolves.

Enrolling Wednesday is more of a walk down memory lane for Morticia as she refuses to recognize that Wednesday loathes the idea of attending.

In a matter of days, Wednesday witnesses a classmate be murdered by an unknown monster and almost gets murdered herself. She also starts honing in on her psychic abilities. These events spark her mission to discover what the monster is, getting herself deeper into the town’s history with the outcasts.

Murders continue to occur, and Wednesday finds herself at the middle of it all. Her headmaster, Principal Weems, and the town sheriff, Officer Gaplin, begin to suspect her.

Along the way, Wednesday finds herself opening up and even starts to tolerate her classmates — one of which is her roommate Enid.

Enid is the complete opposite of Wednesday. She enjoys colors, especially pink, and loves being involved in school-wide traditions and other activities.

Although they are opposites, Enid brings out a new side to Wednesday. She still has her witty and dark personality, but Wednesday gets increasingly involved with school activities and even finds herself making friends.

Wednesday breaks out of her shell by competing in an annual boat race called The Poe Cup, but she also makes enemies with the leader of the sirens, Bianca Barclay.

This series has an amazing plot, and the casting for the Addams family is spot on. Jenna Ortega’s interpretation of Wednesday’s morbid character is brilliant, especially with her lack of blinking, uncomfortable glares, and bizarre dance at their school prom.

Wednesday’s character perfectly highlights embracing being different, and not caring about other people’s opinions.

Although the series is short, the final scenes leave an idea of a second season up to interpretation, despite the fact that Netflix has yet to announce a renewal.
