‘Valentine’s Day’ is a failed take on romantic holiday

Ella Campbell, Staff Writer

Valentine’s Day was released on February 12, 2010 in anticipation for the upcoming holiday. The movie is a romantic comedy, a huge genre known for a good laugh and a few tears shed here and there. The movie let many viewers down, including myself.

The movie includes many A-list actors including Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Emma Roberts, Patrick Dempsey, and even Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner. To say the movie was filled with talented actors is an understatement. Valentine’s Day has so much potential to be a great movie with the strength of the actors, but, unfortunately, the plot does not meet the standards.

Valentine’s Day follows a series of couples who navigate the tricky roads of romance. There are way too many storylines, some of these being: a couple trying to figure out an engagement, a young puppy love, and the high school stereotypical cheerleader girlfriend and football player boyfriend.

There are still more storylines, and each feels more cliché than the next. Also, not every storyline is fully developed, leaving the plot with many holes. There are way too many characters to keep up with, and the viewers are overloaded with plot lines.

Many viewers went to theaters to see the movie as it was believed to be similar to fan favorite Love Actually, with the different plot lines somehow connected, according to IMDB reviews. However, they were let down as the movie did not live up to the standard that was set for this style of film.

Contradictory to the 5.7/10 rating on IMDB, the movie surpassed its $52,000,000 budget within its opening weekend, making $56,260,707 just in the United States and Canada alone. This made it the second highest opening weekend for a romantic comedy ever. The movie then went on to make over $200 million at the worldwide box office.

If you are looking for a feel-good movie to watch on Valentine’s Day itself, this movie is not for you. Instead of leaving a good impression, this film is will just leave a sense of disappointment in its wasted potential. There are many other great options to watch instead of Valentine’s Day.

However, if you would like to give it a try, it can be found on HBO Max to stream, or can sometimes be found playing in local theaters around the holiday itself.
