The brand-new live action film ‘Snow White’ was released on March 21, ‘Snow White’ was originally Walt Disney’s first full length animated movie that came out in 1937. Since then, ‘Snow White’ has been a stage play, a German- French animated film, a Japanese anime, and a musical.
The lead actress who plays the role of Snow White is Rachel Zegler, a 23-year-old American actress and singer.
Since the film has made its way into theaters, there have been a lot of mixed opinions. Snow White is currently facing lots of backlash, stemming from concerns about its casting, portrayal of little people, and the political views of the lead actress.
Getting into more detail is Zegler’s Columbian heritage and her comments about the original film. She caused a bit of controversy when she called the movie “dated” and noted what she believes is the movie’s sexist elements.
Zegler’s comments about the original film, including her critique of its portrayal of female power and her description of the prince’s pursuit as “stalking,” were taken out of context and used to portray her as disrespectful.
Also, the decision to avoid using actors with dwarfism for the Seven Dwarfs and instead utilizing CGI, has been criticized as insensitive and as a missed opportunity. This has led to more backlash of the movie. It was also criticized by Peter Dinklage and other actors with dwarfism for reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
Bloggers on websites like Reddit have discussed how Zegler’s casting as Snow White, a character traditionally depicted with “skin as white as snow,” sparked outrage and accusations of racism.
Disney’s brand has also faced a backlash, and critics argue that their marketing of the film has been insensitive and has failed to address the controversies surrounding the production.
Senior Hailey Lowe saw the movie with her family over break. “The movie was overall good, but after reading some of the hate it’s getting, I would definitely agree with some of it.”
The movie was shown in theaters all around our local community of Bel Air until May 1.
Overall, while the movie was intended to be more inclusive and modern, it may have inadvertently caused more harm and misunderstanding among some viewers.
