The Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’ premiered on April 15, 2020. It quickly spread globally as the number one show to watch in quarantine. The show reached number one on Netflix in the US within three weeks of its initial debut.
The show takes place on Kildare Island in the Outer Banks; the island is divided into two areas: Figure 8, where the wealthy Kooks reside, and The Cut, where the lower-income Pogues live.
In the beginning of the show viewers are introduced to Pogues; John B, JJ Maybank, Pope, and Kiara. Viewers get a preview of their rebellious laid-back life as they enjoy summer with their friends, doing what they want, whenever they want.
It then cuts to the kook life with the Ward family, Topper, and Kelce. They have superior attitudes and are discriminative against the less wealthy Pogues.
From the beginning, it is visible that the Kooks and Pogues do not get along at all, and it creates some big issues in the show’s story.
The mystery begins with the disappearance of main character John B’s father. He disappeared at sea one day and never came back; most people believe he is dead, but John B’s main goal is to find him and figure out what happened.
Between new love, fighting, murder, and family drama, everyone is on a big treasure hunt to find the gold.
This series so far has four seasons, but a final season is confirmed to be airing soon. Every season showcases one Pouge and their connection to the big treasure hunt, keeping viewers intrigued and not bored of the same storyline.
Season One is often considered a fan favorite for introducing the characters and the storyline of the show. Season Two is also praised for elevating the stakes and intensifying the plot.
Outer Banks was primarily filmed in Charleston, South Carolina, so most of their sets are real places, or shops. They also filmed some in Barbados when they left the country in the show.
Outer Banks’ tropical settings and summer-feel attract viewers as being the perfect summer watch. They also use special lighting like Golden Hour and blue filters to contribute to the show’s aesthetic atmosphere and really portray a summer night on the beach.
The show also has a specific soundtrack with lots of reggae and beachy type songs to showcase the tropical environment.
