Personality can determine proper test

December 12, 2014

Every student dreads taking standardized tests. They are long, occur too early in the morning, and are just plain out stressful. Nowadays kids have two options: the ACT and the SAT. But is one better?

The ACT is considered as more of a “big-picture” exams. While with the SAT, scores are generally considered individually by section, ACT scores are usually judged on the overall composite score.

It is also important to know the facts, so you can make an informed decision. Below is the “need-to-know” information about each test:

The ACT

  • 3 hours, 25 min. (with 30 min. optional writing portion)
  • 4 sections: English, Math, reading, Science
  • Essay is optional and occurs at the end
  • No penalty for wrong answers
  • All multiple choice math questions and material extends into trigonometry

The SAT

  • 3 hours, 45 min.
  • 10 sections: 3 Critical Reading, 3 Math, 3 Writing, 1 Experimental
  • Essay is mandatory and occurs first
  • ¼ of point off for each wrong answer
  • Includes generate-your-own-answer math questions

While knowing the basics can make the decision easier, it can still be hard to choose. The great news is, most colleges don’t care! You can pick whichever is best for you, and you can take each multiple times. But to help you choose, take this quiz below:
