The spring dance concert at The John Carroll School took place in the auditorium on Friday, May 2.
The choreography performed in this concert was mainly contemporary and modern-style dancing. This is a different form of dancing from the extensive use of ballet in former dance recitals and concerts throughout the year.
This concert was meant to celebrate the graduating seniors’ accomplishments in the dance field.
College Preparatory Dance Program Director Laura Ward-Moran said, “Out of all the performances we create each year, this one is the easiest to make happen as it doesn’t require an extensive set or costuming like The Nutcracker and our Story Ballets do.”
While Mrs. Ward-Moran stresses that this concert is especially easy to put together, it does come along with challenges.
One of the challenges that the dance community at JC faced while preparing for this concert was the timing. This concert was back-to-back with the Spring Story Ballet recital, making it harder to find time to rehearse for this concert as well.
This concert would not be possible without a brilliant team of dancers and instructors working together to create this masterpiece. The selection of dancers and their pieces of work was organized by the head of the department of dance.
Mrs. Ward-Moran said, “Each senior had the opportunity to create and share her work for the concert. Current JC faculty were utilized to work on a dance for each grade level for this performance.”
All of these senior dancers are a part of the JC dance program, which works to explore opportunities related to the arts of dance and values the fluidity of the art as well as the students’ academics.
Mrs. Ward-Moran said, “I founded the College Preparatory Dance Program in 2016, welcoming our first group of dancers in 2017. Since then, the program has grown immensely and now includes a Ballet Academy feeder school that serves children as young as two-years-old.”
