As the spring sports season has come to a close, The Patriot takes a look back on the sports teams and how they performed this year.
Men’s Lacrosse
The men’s varsity lacrosse team finished with a regular season record of 12-6. The team made it to the MIAA ‘B’ Conference championship game only to lose 10 to 13 against St. Peter and Paul. “We had a fabulous season, however we did not achieve our ultimate goal of winning the championship,” head coach Matthew Blair said. “I think the season went better than I expected since the conference was really tough and we did well.”
Women’s Lacrosse
The varsity women’s lacrosse team finished the season with a record of 6-9. Coach Skeeta Grimes said, “We could have done better. We had a lot of players that improved on a certain quality that they lost last season. One player that stood out the most was Mackenzie Rayburn. She went from being third string last year in defense to a starter.” Grimes felt that the most important game this season was the game against Severn.
Women’s Badminton
The women’s varsity badminton team had a successful season finishing with a record of 8-0. “We were undefeated in our conference and we won the [IAAM ‘B’] conference championship,” head coach Tess Gauthier said. “We were always in the middle of the pack [when there was one division] so when we made the split to the ‘B’ conference I thought we would do good.” As for JV, Gauthier said, “They did pretty well and a lot of kids tried out. We had tremendous improvement since we had nine courts to practice on this year.”
Softball
The varsity women’s softball team finished the season with a record of 5-12. According to junior Sarah Ford, “We could have done a lot better this season. We could have made not as many errors on defense and have been a little more aggressive on our batting as well.”
Tennis
The tennis team finished the season with a record of 6-3. According to coach Rodney Johnson, “They did as well as I would have expected them to do.” Looking forward to next season,” Johnson said. “We need to replace one or two singles players, especially Brian Cadden and Thomas Sullivan.” Junior Sam Werneke, senior Thomas Sullivan, and sophomore Jake O’Brien all went to the playoffs this season.
Golf
The Golf team, coached by social studies teacher Tony DelPuppo, finished the season with an 0-8 record. Despite the bad record, not all was lost for the team. Junior Brian Matejecvich believed the team has shown much improvement from previous seasons. “We have gotten a lot better but it just did not show in the scores,” Matejevich said.
Baseball
The baseball team, coached by Steve Teter, finished the season with a 11-12 record. The team missed the MIAA ‘A’ conference playoffs by only one game. Junior Cole Bauer said, “We have improved a lot from last year. We almost made it into the playoffs and last year we were not even close to that.”
Track
The men’s track team finished this season with a 8-1 season, almost completing a three peat or three consecutive wins for conference champions. The men’s track team won the cobra relays this season and finished seventh at the MIAA championship meet. The women’s track team finished the season with a 5-4 record. They finished fourth at the IAAM championships this season.
